Solomon’s Porch, Pastor Doug Pagitt.

I applaud Solomon’s Porch in their community atmosphere. It is really what many churches are trying to attain I think, in my opinion. I am afraid to me it really seemed like they had church centered around the community by having the church in the motif of a home. It seemed to me like the purpose of worship was to gather as community and fellowship and not to worship. But aside from that it was great. I even like the music. I think many churches could learn from this kind of environment. I wonder if we could do something similar but have the church look like a church, and have the fellowships centered around the church. Maybe they did and I did not see it. I looked several times and sometimes I thought I saw it sometimes not.
Jim and Carla Barnhill bringing in Chris Dyson to live with them is however over the top. Developing community between members is great but I think this is the wrong application of the concept. Jim and Carla are a beautiful couple and Chris is a pretty lady herself. Jim was right it was a no-brainer. I am glad that love is more than a concept to them. I would have huge theological problems here. I think it is great they want to help but I disagree that this is the way.
I also wonder why the pastor did not dissuade the arrangement, maybe he is not aware of it. This can not help but give the wrong impression to the community. To me, I think this would also ruin the testimony of the church, in my opinion.

This is my real post. The first one was an oops!

I was glad to see that he mentioned other missionary organizations. He mentioned the AD200 movement, the Global consultation o World Evangelization, MAF, Bible Societies, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Gideons, and the Every Home for Christ. He realized it is a collective effort to reach the people in the 10/40. Too often we hear the point of view of what one missionary is doing, church or only the WBF has to offer. He acknowledged such films and literature as the Jesus films, and Christian radio like the Trans World Radio, and the Far East Broadcasting, etc.
It is funny to me the “Lone Ranger” is dead yet many groups think it is their job to continue his legacy. No one church, mission board, or agency can go it alone. I enjoyed hearing about the collective efforts of everyone being credited.

The 10/40 window is being stressed a lot. Many of the countries in this window have been closed or are still closed to Christians. That is why missionaries are having to go in to these countries in very unusual and creative ways. I also noticed that some of these places were greatly evangelized in early history and since have turned away from God. These lands are the places we read about in the Bible where it all began. How very sad that this is now the unreached.
Technology has played a very big part in evangelizing people. I think the greatest of all is radio. It was instrumental in a village in I visited in Mexico. A church was started because of radio. Two elderly women that had received Christ as a result of a missionary passing through their village discovered a preacher on the radio. They desired to have church but had no preacher so they stayed up late on Saturday night to record the messages and then they played them for their families on Sunday. As a result one of their grandson’s received Christ, went to seminary, and has now returned to the village as missionary and pastor.
Radio is being used in Ukraine as well. When I visited Kharkiv in 2004 I met a man that started a radio ministry. He is able to broadcast across the entire country of Ukraine for one hour every day. Many people have come to know the Lord through this ministry. They have a Bible study correspondence course that they mail out to anyone that contacts them. It is amazing what God can do.

Mark,
Why do you see the Barnhill’s being in the wrong? I am curious as to what you see wrong with it. My only issue with it was that the possible temptation of Jim with two women being in the house. It may not be the best dynamic for American culture, but there are many families all over the world that live in the same house. In Ukraine for instance there are two and three families living together in the same apartment. This is largely due to the fact that they cannot afford their own homes. I believe that was the case with Chris Dyson. I would also like to know where the theological problem is. Does the Bible teach there is to be only one family per house? My problem is a single woman living in the house of a couple, yet I’m not sure it is truly scripturally wrong.

Reaching out and being a true disciple for christ wont be comfortable for us all we must travel place we never heard of. Christians are to spread the Gospel to the right and the left, and that can be equally state north, south, east and west. In 2000, out of 6 billion people in the world he estimated that between 1.2 - 1.4 billion had never heard of the gospel. that sad! 90% of the poorest neglected, underprivledged children live in the area where the gospel is not be shared. in Matthew, Jesus clearly tells us to make disciples of all peoples in the world.(thayer Lawson)

Mark,

I agree that evagelizing the 10/40 window is going to take great effort and that no one person or organization is going to be able to do it alone. There are a great many that have become interested in the 10/40. The concern is wether or not all of them are spreading the true gospel of Christ.

Your right, we just have to accept that they are. There is no way I can tell who is not. The MAF is just a support agency. Some of the multimedia that they mentioned I believe is Christian. Sure some may not be, and then they would have to dealt with too.

I recently read another article concerning the 10/40 window. I was shocked to see how many people make up the world’s population within this window. The reality of a lost and dying world is evident; whether it’s deception by lies and false religions or simply because no one has told them about the truth and love that’s in Christ Jesus and what He has done for us. I really appreciate those that are being sent out into these countries and staying faithful and devoted to what Christ has called them to do. God use them in a mighty way, in Jesus name. amen (Trey Hyman)

Hey Mark,

I really liked what you said about collectively reaching the people in the 10/40 window. Teamwork is a great fundamental to implement with missions. These various organizations have capitalized on that concept. If you examine what each organization does, you see that they support and contribute to one another. For example, Wycliffe produce translated Bibles in newly discovered languages that create opportunities for Gideons to share the Word of God with other nations. Another perspective of team missions.
