This one is almost too much for me. I can’t agree with the music in this clip. How can music of this world be made glorifying to God? I’m not sure truth is felt but believed. All things were created by God including music. Though didn’t sin corrupt this world? I don’t believe we can take the corrupt sinful music of this world that was made to appeal to man’s flesh and just change the words to make it glorifying to God. (Meisha Deane)

I agree with what Mark Driscoll said about God being the creator and made us to be creative. I am not sure about what he was referring to when he said that, “before sin entered the world the only record words of a human being is a man sing to his wife.”??? (Adam singing to Eve)??? Everything else I hear I agree with just the one spot. He has other things on the web and I indulged myself. I like most the other preaching I see of him.
He said, “To mediate the truth of Jesus through a culture you need to speak the same language as the people in the culture. What that means then is musically it should sound the same as everything else that is being played. But content should be different and should be something that does align itself with the truth of scripture and the truth of Jesus.” First, the language is English not music. Music is the median through which the English is communicated. Second, his philosophy of music may be OK but I disagree with his application of that philosophy. I hear what Tim Smith said, “I do not see in scripture any prescription in style of form of worship service or in anyway. So I think there is a great deal of freedom that God has allowed for the church to be different.” My question is why content should be different and not musically? Why can’t it be different musically too. It is a known fact that music does have a profound effect on people and things around us. I heard (and I don’t know the source any more) that music may have a bigger effect on us even more that words do. If this is true why should we limit God to using only words and not music? In Scripture God says a lot about music too and even used music in worship. Scripture says “hymns and spiritual songs” we should not use spiritual music too not only rock music and he did say theirs is predominantly rock.

I agree with you about the music. We should be able to glorify God in word and music. I just have a hard time seeing the “predominately rock” glorifying God.
You brought up one thing that I was not sure about at first and that is if “truth is felt.” I think, truth is truth regardless of feelings. Because then what does that do to salvation, when we don’t feel saved.

Mars Hill Church looks and sounds to me to be focused on culture instead of God first. Music, I believe, in all genres can be glorifying to God, but is left up to the believer's heart. I personally try to find worship in all Christian music, whether hardcore, metal, or gospel. It's the lyrics of the music that makes it worship, not the sound. I don't agree with the church's outtake on trying to make it a comfortable environment. Church isn't always comfortable, and is not about us. It's about God. Who cares if the lights are dimmed or dark? Who cares if he's in a suit or in shorts? Who bloomin' cares? We focus on everything but God a lot of times in church. It should be opposite. I think Mars Hill has got it opposite. This is probably the number one church that I've seen that I have a problem with. (John Hyman)
Knowing you, Meisha, and caring for you and loving you as a sister in Christ, I know your stance on some issues of the church. I can understand where you stand on music. But as for me, if you think that hymns or contemporary music are the only form of music worship in the church, and think all other genres are sin, then I can turn it around and say that hymns and contemporary music is sin. Sometimes, we focus more on the sound than on the worship of God. I moshed at a Demon Hunter (metal band) concert, and I felt the spirit of God move through the crowd. I saw people worshiping God not because of sound, but because God is extremely awesome, and is not limited to hymns. It's the lyrics of music that lead us to the feet of Jesus, not our selfish look at music. (John Hyman)
This video gives the perspective that “the essence and the element of music” are the main factors of what drives this church. I hope that’s not the case. I think the pastor’s passion is pretty solid; to convey the truth in a real and upfront method and to exalt God ultimately; we must decrease so He can increase. I liked how said it, “people need to know they suck”, cause we do. We are wretched sinners and it’s only by God’s grace that He gives us a second chance through His Son, Jesus Christ. Either you have the truth or you don’t. (Trey Hyman)
John, I really don’t think Meisha hates other types of Christian Music, but she does have an understanding of songs that ushers others to worship and songs the minister to others. I will say Demon Hunter has some awesome, Biblical, and God honoring songs but to others it can be a hindrance and a distraction. Props for using the word “moshed” in a blog. (Trey Hyman)
John,
The church is not just about you either. There are certain aspects to consider when implementing ideas in a church environment. For example, senior citizens have a hard time reading their Bibles in low dim light setting. So that element probably wouldn’t be as effective at most churches. You have to consider others because it can become a hindrance or even a distraction. You don’t want to seclude people in church because the worst could happen, it could lead to a split. There has to be a balance between both worlds, otherwise they will never come together as one. God did not intend to have a young crowd and an old crowd. He intended ONE crowd. Although some prefer more up to date things, others may prefer something more traditional. What makes their preference more important than others? Nothing. God cares for each of us, regardless of our preference. Growing and accepting the culture we are in is one thing, taking our preference and making it scripture is another.
